Multisport Adventure

Start your trip right in Riggins, the "whitewater capital of the world". Rafting and kayaking trips on the mighty Salmon "River of No Return" can be arranged through the Idaho Outfitters and Guides IOGA Association.

Riggins is also the gateway to the Seven Devils Mountains and Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. Camping and hiking these high elevation 9,393 peaks opens up around July of each year.

Hells Canyon, the deepest gorge in North America, is also accessible from Lewiston, where jet boat tours are popular, as well as rafting and fishing. Guided tours are available through IOGA to explore sandy beaches, ancient petroglyphs, and Lewis and Clark sites. Find out more about this fabulous canyon by contacting the Hells Canyon Visitor Association.

While in Lewiston, rent a mountain bike and explore the Snake River Trail System or head north to Moscow and explore dozens of miles of maintained mountain bike trails. Moscow is a classic university town and offers a variety of great pubs and nightlife, as well as more high brow cultural activities. You could also ake a break from your exertions and enjoy the beach at Hells Gate State Park, minutes from downtown Lewiston

From Lewiston you can also head northeast on Highway 12, which parallels the route Lewis and Clark took and follows the incredibly scenic Clearwater and Lochsa Rivers. Orofino, Weippe, Pierce, Kamiah and Kooskia offer lodging and visitor services along the way.

Enjoy more rafting on the undiscovered Lochsa River or head for the wilderness from Orofino to retrace the original Lewis and Clark trail. Contact the Clearwater National Forest for more information on traveling the Lolo Trail/Forest Road 500, which approximates the route Lewis and Clark followed over the Bitterroot Mountains. Horsepacking trips are also available in this area by contacting IOGA.
