Family Fun
Rafting isn't just for grownups. There are many options for family raft trips on the Salmon River near Riggins, contact the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association (IOGA) for one to fit your group. As you head north on Hwy 95 from Riggins, take your budding paleontologists to the Tolo Lake Wooly Mammoth replica in Grangeville near Eimer Park.
The kids will want to make a souvenir stop at Dog Bark Park near Cottonwood. You can't miss the 30-foot dog structure near the highway. Reserve a yurt at least one night at Winchester State Park near Winchester, it's a family fishing and camping experience without the tent hassles. While you're there take your wild things to the Wolf Education and Research Center, where you can view wolves in their natural habitat and learn more about the resident wolf pack.
While in Lewiston spend a day at the beach at Hells Gate State Park, or take a bike ride on the Snake River Trail system through town. Hells Canyon National Recreation Area (America's deepest gorge) is accessible by jet boat or raft, see the IOGA website for a list of guides and tours.
Older kids will enjoy a tour of the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, while younger ones will frolic all day at the new Moscow city water park.
Kids of all ages can practice their Lewis and Clark skills at Fir Bluff Tepee Camp on the Clearwater River. Participants paddle canoes, shoot bows and arrows, and stay in tepees near the actual areas that the famous explorers traveled.
Near Orofino take the kids to the Dworshak Fish Hatchery, or give them a taste of Native American history at the Heart of the Monster near Kamiah, where the Nez Perce creation story is told.
