Great Escapes

Nothing says luxury adventure like a guided raft trip. Check out a variety of trips near Riggins on the Salmon River from the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association (IOGA).

If you prefer your luxury on land, plan to stay at the Lodge at Riggins Hot Springs. This full service backcountry resort features a variety of daytime adventures, sumptuous meals, and intimate accommodations designed to refresh and renew your spirit.

If native history intrigues you, stop by the interpretive center of the Nez Perce National Historical Park in Spalding. The Nez Perce, or Ni Mii Pu, welcomed the starving Lewis and Clark expedition in September 1805 after a terrible traverse over the Bitterroot Mountains.

At Lewiston take the opportunity to jet boat or raft down Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, America's deepest gorge. See the Guided Tours section of this website for information on special Lewis and Clark interpretive tours through this pristine area.

When you're ready for culture, head north to Moscow, home of the University of Idaho Repertory Theatre and center for the arts, concerts and museums. Downtown is especially inviting, visit the Camas Winery for specialty wine and beer.

Journey up the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway on Highway 12 for breathtaking views of the Clearwater and Lochsa Rivers. Your hosts at the Hearthstone Lodge near Kamiah or the Lookinglass Inn near Kooskia can direct you to a number of Lewis and Clark interpretive sites on or near the highway.
