Clarkie Culture
Start your Lewis and Clark tour near Cottonwood with a stop at the Historical Museum at St. Gertrude. Located on the grounds of St. Gertrude Monastery, this museum features early pioneer and rare oriental collections. Don't miss their Raspberry Festival in August.
The Nez Perce National Historical Park in Spalding provides an excellent introduction to the native cultures Lewis and Clark encountered in Idaho. Continue west on Highway 12 to Lewiston, where you can experience your own river excursion on a jetboat through Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.
Lewis and Clark interpretive tours are also available through Clearwater Connections on the "Clarkie Express" motorcoach, or at the Fir Bluff Tepee Camp near Lenore. Contact the IOGA for special Lewis and Clark rafting and horsepacking tours in the area.
If you're touring on your own, head up the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway on Highway 12 and visit a number of interpretive sites on or near the highway. RVers will appreciate the community atmosphere in Kamiah, center of Lewis and Clark history. Head a few miles up the highway to Kooskia to the restored Olde Opera House and enjoy some old time entertainment.
Don't miss the historic Lochsa Ranger Station for perspective on the area in the 1920's, and visit the DeVoto Memorial Groves for a relaxing break. Bernard DeVoto was an early historian of the Lewis and Clark journals.
